Sunday competition this week was an afternoon only shoot, which turned out to be a good decision as on reaching Ronaldsway the archers found that there was a car boot sale taking place on the shooting field. Following a quick change of venue to the shorter training field, the club members shot the first National round of the season. This was a welcome change to the necessary Fita rounds shot in training up to the Island Games, although GB Squad member Aalin George, along with coach, Peter Mumford, elected to shoot the new 50m qualification round for Compounds in preparation for Aalin’s competition next weekend when she travels to Cyprus with the GB Squad for the European Junior Cup. Despite heavy rain in the Douglas/Onchan area, the weather at Ronaldsway was perfect with warm sunshine and only a very slight breeze. Senior Recurve Gents, Billy Lightfoot and Frank Vaughan had a good contest with Billy taking the honours. Colin Moore shot the compound gents round on his own this week and despite having a hiccough when moving his sight the wrong way at the beginning of the second distance and incurring a miss, still managed to produce a very creditable score. The two senior Ladies Recurve archers also had a good competitive shoot, with the experience Anne Rutland gained in the Island Games really showing itself and giving her a comfortable win over Barbara Harris.
The three junior girls shot the National round applicable to their age groups. 10 yr old Meghan Pilley in the Junior Recurve shot a competitive round for the first time and her score of 562 shows she is improving with each shoot. Charlotte Harris, also recurve, shot a score of 545, slightly below her usual level, and Kirsten George, shooting compound put in a very good total of 636, with just six arrows out of the gold.
In the round shot by Aalin and coach Peter, once again Aalin showed that she is a force to be reckoned with, beating Peter by 14 points in the 2x 50m round.
The icing on the cake was that all nearly all archers set new PB’s which shows how seldom these particular rounds are shot.
