by isleofman.com 13th July 2011
Staff from Barclays Wealth have raised over ?6,000 for their Charity of the Year, Hospice Isle of Man, by taking part in the Parish Walk. A further ?4,000 has been raised for a variety of other charities. In glorious Manx weather the intrepid team of 51 Barclays Wealth walkers gathered at the National Sports Centre to start the 85 mile marathon trek. The course passes through every Parish on the Island where walkers times are recorded at the Parish Church, competitors can retire at any Parish along the way and are credited with the miles they have completed. Of the 1,543 walkers who started this year 159 completed the full 85 miles within the 24 hour allotted time. One of the finishers was Barclays Wealth Service Executive Andrew Corris who walked the course in 23 hours 39 minutes. The team wore special high-visibility vests which featured the Barclays Wealth and Hospice Isle of Man logos and between them walked a total of 1,837 miles! As well as entering a team of walkers, Barclays Wealth also manned two refreshments stands to provide bottles of water, bananas and sweets to all competitors. Volunteers also set up a support crew to follow the team around the course in cars to provide refreshments, plasters and encouragement where needed. The Parish Walk activities at Barclays Wealth were organised by Suzanna Ogden, Rebecca Stride, Dino Mazzone and June Cannell who encourage their colleagues to sign-up for the event and organised training walks, sessions with a personal trainer and a talk from Parish Walk legend Jock Waddington who won last weekend for the fourth consecutive year. Managing Director for Barclays Wealth Simon Scott said: ‘I was very proud to hear of the commitment of our team which was rewarded with the fantastic sum they raised for our Charity of the Year. Many people gave up their day on Saturday to go out and support our team and encourage them along the way to their goal Parish, it was a fantastic team effort and I would like to thank Rebecca, Suzanna, Dino and June for all their hard work to organise our team’s involvement.’ ENDS
