Team Royal London 360 Youth Cyclists Compete in British National Championships

by isleofman.com 27th July 2011
Competing against the top young cyclists in Britain, a total of seventeen Team Royal London 360 riders produced some excellent performances at last Sunday's 2011 British National Youth Circuit Race Championships. The event was held for the first time in the picturesque Lister Park in Bradford and the 1.85km circuit, which contained fast sweeping bends and a brutal climb, provided a true test for the 350 competitors. Jake Kelly missed out on a bronze medal in the youth A category (under 16) by the narrowest of margins, taking fourth place in a sprint finish with Jacob Scott (Planet X). Jake was in the winning break of five riders that got away on the climb and soon built up a commanding lead. With four laps remaining eventual winner Chris Lawless (Maxgear RT) and runner-up Tao Geoghegan-Hart (CC Hackney) attacked and were never seen again, leaving Scott and Kelly to battle it out for the final place on the podium. After making a valiant but unsuccessful attempt to get across to the leaders, Joshua Knights finished 21st in the main chasing group. Jamie Dudley circulated in the bunch for most of the race but was one of the many riders that were pulled out after being lapped. The under 14's event ended in a bunch sprint, with Nathan Draper crossing the line in a very good eighth spot. Matthew Bostock, Michael Moss and Joseph Haddock were further down the field in about 42nd, 46th and 50th places respectively, while Matthew Draper came 56th after suffering a mechanical problem. Owen Dudley retired with a puncture. Daniel Tulett (Hargroves Cycles) was the runaway winner of the under 12's race, taking the honours a massive 1 min 26 secs ahead of a well strung out field. Conor Davies was 17th at 3.04 and William Draper 19th at 3.18. In the under 16 girls championship Anna Christian was contesting fourth place when she was struck with cramp on the final climb, forcing her to stop. She eventually rejoined the action and did very well to salvage tenth place. Sophie Black was lapped and pulled out while lying in about 19th spot. Under 14 girls competitors Elizabeth Holden and Phoebe Ferguson were also victims of the organisers strict lapped rider rule, being forced out while holding onto 16th and 20th positions. The rule was quickly amended when the organisers realised that there was a danger that winner Charlotte Broughton (Leicestershire Road Club) was going to lap the whole field. The final event of the day was a non- championship race for under 10 and under 8 boys and girls combined. Peel's Tosh Teare unshipped his chain on the climb while lying second but recovered well to outsprint Matthew Egglestone (Beacon Wheelers) for a brilliant third place. Charlie Moss also rode well to outgun Megan Cullan (Otley CC) in the dash for 19th. Ends
