Bobby Moore Charity Golf Day 2011

by isleofman.com 28th July 2011
A Golf Day and dinner held in memory of the only England football captain to ever lift the Jules Rimet trophy was played on the Isle of Man on 15 July 2011. Despite uncertain weather, 15 teams of avid golfers took to the Mount Murray for 18 holes of challenging championship course golf, which saw just three points separate first, second and third positions. Top honours deservedly went to Team “3 Legs of Man” with a score of 91 points, with Anne Gundry, Mike Henthorn and Ernie Russell collecting team gold medals. Individual men’s and ladies champions were Terry Moore and Anne Gundy respectively. The event, sponsored by Celton Manx, was a fund-raiser for The Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK, and was attended by a number of celebrities, including Stephanie Moore MBE – widow of Bobby Moore, former England and Watford footballer, Luther Blissett, Kevin Woodford – Celebrity Chef, John Salako – Reading, Crystal Palace, Charlton and Coventry City, Milky Quayle – TT races winner 2002 and the irrepressible Duncan McKenzie – Everton, Leeds Utd, Chelsea, Nottingham Forest, Blackburn Rovers and Anderlecht, who delivered an excellent after dinner speech. The event secured further support from Flybe and Buchanan BMW. Isle of Man resident and personal friend of Bobby and Stephanie’s, Lars T. Ugland, put the golf day together, and drew on the support of a number of local companies, that, at the end of the day, raised a staggering ?18 000.00 for The Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK. Auction prizes available on the evening presented the opportunity to bid for some money-can’t-buy pieces – including a child’s mascot place at the forth-coming England vs. Wales game, as well as Bobby Moore Club tickets to watch England at Wembley, the opportunity to actually play football at Wembley as well as a selection of football related memorabilia. The money raised will be making a significant contribution to scientific research of Bowel Cancer, which claimed Bobby’s life at the age of just 51 years. It is hoped that the event will be repeated in 2012 Ends
