Celebrating 135 Years of the Douglas Horse Tram Service

by isleofman.com 2nd August 2011
Sunday August 7, 2011 marks the 135th anniversary of the Douglas horse tram service. Douglas Borough Council will be celebrating with a cavalcade of trams departing from Strathallan Crescent from 2pm. Children will receive a small gift and have an opportunity to meet the horses which will be dressed for the occasion. Leisure services committee chairman Councillor Stephen Pitts said: ‘The service started life on August 7 1876 as Douglas Bay Horse Tramway and has operated ever since, interrupted only by World War Two. The Council is enormously proud of the service which offers a unique perspective of Douglas promenade and is one of the Island’s finest examples of vintage transport. The cavalcade of trams will provide some wonderful photo opportunities and will be a fitting celebration to mark the 135th anniversary of the oldest horse-drawn tramway in the world.’ For more information about the service, visit www.douglashorsetramway.net ENDS
