Albany Tennis Club News

by isleofman.com 10th August 2011
Monday morning - 9.30am and players are arriving at Albany’s Ballaughton Meadows courts for a good cause. There were 16 women and 4 men “Paying to Play” a doubles competition in aid of the British Heart Foundation – Isle of Man. After a much needed tea or coffee to wake players up, play was underway. Run in two groups and everyone playing with and against their partners. Organiser Jane Gullan and club coach, Ian Watson as referee kept the programme flowing and by 1pm the groups had been completed. Bryan Sharp and Chris Budd will represent the men of Albany in the Island Final – date yet to be fixed and two out of three, these being Val Worth, Margaret Drake and Barbara Foley. Ian has been asked to find a formula to decide which two will represent the club!! Ample supplies of tea, coffee, sandwiches and home-made cakes added to the occasion and it was decided to do the same next year. Charles Sentence thanked everyone for supporting the event and explained how the money raised is being used on the island. This Sunday August 14 will see the Todmorden Shield competed for between Albany, Castletown and Ramsey. This annual competion is a team event, hosted this year by Albany and the club has selected a strong team to try and retain the trophy. It is Marc Chinn, Bruce Wagstaff, Ronan McDonnell, Chris Walker, Laura Feely, Sarah Breed, Catherine Breed and Anna Jones. Play starts at 2pm and spectators are welcome and club support plus help with refreshments would be appreciated.
