‘A picture is worth a thousand words’
When young people from across St Christopher’s (Isle of Man) were given the opportunity to express themselves through art, little did they know that the result would be a three week exhibition, running until the end of August, at the Tynwald exhibition space, located in the Tynwald library on the ground floor of the Legislative Buildings on Finch Road in Douglas.
The project aims to increase public understanding and awareness of the emotional and mental experiences that young people in care have been through but are unable to express in words.
The opportunity to use art to express themselves will not only be an insight for the public but it has also proved to be of huge benefit to the young people. They were able to discuss feelings and translate them into colours; red for warmth and energy, pink for love and romance, blue for tranquillity, green for nature and the environment, grey for security, white for peace and black for anger and fear.
Communication is so important for these young people who often feel that they are not listened to and their voices not heard. At St Christopher’s we are always looking at new ways to communicate, be it through film, music or art. The young people worked together as a team to produce some excellent art and are looking forward to seeing their work exhibited.
