The Island’s generosity was demonstrated by last month’s DEC collection for the East Africa appeal, with a grand total of ?2,947.89 raised. The One World Centre co-ordinated volunteers to make street collections in Castletown, Douglas, Peel, Port Erin and Ramsey, while shoppers at Co-op stores donated via counter containers. The total bucket collection was ?2,288.42 and the counter containers brought in a further ?119.47. A church collection and general individual donation brought the total up to nearly ?3,000. The One World Centre is very grateful to G4S who counted, bagged and banked the money as their contribution to the appeal. ‘It was a real challenge to co-ordinate the collection across the Island just three weeks after arriving here,’ said Rosemary Clarke, the One World Centre’s new Director. ‘This amazing result was only possible thanks to the support of so many volunteers. Jabberwocky were a great support in signing buckets in and out for our team in Douglas, while the Co-op and their customers increased the total significantly. I was amazed at the support of G4S – in my previous job I had to organise 60 volunteers to help clean, dry and count ?16,000 from a wishing well appeal!’ – Ends –
