Albany Tennis Club News

by isleofman.com 16th August 2011
Albany members enjoyed some good results at last week’s IOMLTA Closed Veteran Championships held at Castletown. Alastair Montgomery was the most successful winning the men’s singles over 55, the mixed doubles with Linda Faragher(Kensington Road) and with one match still to be played in the over 55 men’s doubles, with Phil Bannan, he is still in with a shout for that title. Phil Bannan was runner-up to Alastair. It was disappointing that some of our younger “veterans” didn’t enter – you only have to be 35. However our president, Bryan Sharp (78) won two of his three matches in the over 65 men’s singles. Both were marathon matches lasting almost 2hrs each In the first he beat Terry Thompson 6/1 6/7(5) (10-7). The other versus Roy McLean saw a similar score with Bryan winning 4/6 6/4 (10-5). Final match with Graham McFarlane was a step too far. Three players tied with 2 wins each with Roy (P.Erin/Albany) as Champion, Graham r/up and Bryan third on count back. The Todmorden Shield fixture, played on Sunday at Ballaughton, saw Albany retain the trophy. Albany had a strong team with Sarah Breed/ Laura Feely only dropping four games and Bruce Wagstaff/Ronan McDonnell dropping just one game. Anna Jones/Catherine Breed and Chris Walker/Marc Chinn all played well to produce a win (89) Castletown (66) and Ramsey (26). This annual fixture will be played at Castletown in 2012. Presidents Day tournament for the splendid En-tout-Cas shield will be held on Sunday September 4 – entry forms are in the clubhouse. Several Albany juniors were successful in the recent IOMLTA Junior Closed Championships at Kensington Road. These were:U8 winner Oliver Wait r/up Sam Skelcher-Maxwell; U9 Amelia Garrett (Albany/Ramsey); r/up Patrick McCord; U10 Jay Skelcher-Maxwell r/up Sidney Batty;U14 Boys Sean Drewry r/up Adam Pyatt-Coppell; U18 Boys Marc Chinn r/up Oliver Broadhead (Albany/Ramsey)Girls U21 Laura Feely r/up Hannah Snidal (Albany/Castletown). Boys 18 Doubles winners Marc Chinn/Jack Snidal r/up Oliver Broadhead/Jack Hedges (Albany/Ramsey)There were also several special awards. Well done all of you. Finally Laura Feely (16) has been playing in the UK in the Aegon British Tour with a 1st round win 7/5 6/3 but losing the next round 4/6,3/6. On to Telford in the Grade 3 Welti Open where she had a bye in the 1st round, won 6/1 6/0 in the qtr.finals and played a great match in the semi against the No. 1 seed Pippa Carr, eventually going down 5/7,6/4,3/6. This week she is in Manchester playing in U18 and Ladies Open. Ends
