Albany members enjoyed some good results at last week’s IOMLTA Closed Veteran Championships held at Castletown. Alastair Montgomery was the most successful winning the men’s singles over 55, the mixed doubles with Linda Faragher(Kensington Road) and with one match still to be played in the over 55 men’s doubles, with Phil Bannan, he is still in with a shout for that title. Phil Bannan was runner-up to Alastair. It was disappointing that some of our younger “veterans” didn’t enter – you only have to be 35. However our president, Bryan Sharp (78) won two of his three matches in the over 65 men’s singles. Both were marathon matches lasting almost 2hrs each In the first he beat Terry Thompson 6/1 6/7(5) (10-7). The other versus Roy McLean saw a similar score with Bryan winning 4/6 6/4 (10-5). Final match with Graham McFarlane was a step too far. Three players tied with 2 wins each with Roy (P.Erin/Albany) as Champion, Graham r/up and Bryan third on count back.
The Todmorden Shield fixture, played on Sunday at Ballaughton, saw Albany retain the trophy. Albany had a strong team with Sarah Breed/ Laura Feely only dropping four games and Bruce Wagstaff/Ronan McDonnell dropping just one game. Anna Jones/Catherine Breed and Chris Walker/Marc Chinn all played well to produce a win (89) Castletown (66) and Ramsey (26). This annual fixture will be played at Castletown in 2012.
Presidents Day tournament for the splendid En-tout-Cas shield will be held on Sunday September 4 – entry forms are in the clubhouse.
