The second phase of Hanover House apartments in Lord Street, Douglas has been completed. The project represents a ?2.1 million investment in public sector housing by Douglas Borough Council in partnership with the Department of Social Care and will provide a further 12 apartments in addition to the 15 units contained in phase one.
All apartments in Hanover House phase two have two bedrooms plus a secure car parking space. The building has a lift and provides full disabled access to all levels. The design, by architectural practice Savage and Chadwick, continues the theme of phase one, using Manx stone and render, while the leading corner facing the Lord Street/Athol Street junction contains a circular tower feature similar to that in the first phase. Contractors were Dandara Contracting Limited.
Douglas Borough Council’s public health and housing committee chairman Councillor Carol Malarkey said: ‘The completion of the second phase of Hanover House is yet another clear demonstration of effective partnership working between the Council and government. The project was completed 13 weeks early and within budget – a fantastic achievement - and on behalf of the Council I extend my sincere thanks to the contractors, the design team and the Department of Social Care for bringing this development to a successful conclusion.
‘The apartments will be allocated to existing tenants in lower Douglas, with consideration given to those with restricted mobility and/or health problems, as the building has a lift providing access to all floors.
‘I am delighted to see the completion of the second phase of Hanover House, a project that demonstrates the Council’s commitment to providing affordable quality public sector housing and complements our continuing investment in the regeneration of Douglas town centre.’
Minister for Social Care Hon Martyn Quayle added: ‘May I congratulate Douglas Borough Council on the completion of this important project. My department remains committed to providing a range of affordable housing across the Island, both public sector rented and first-time buyers’ properties and this latest project is a valuable contribution to that goal.’
