Manx Telecom’s Commonwealth Youth Games Project Will Create a Lasting Legacy

by isleofman.com 30th August 2011
Manx Telecom is playing a vital role in helping news about the Commonwealth Youth Games 2011 to be sent around the world, and new wireless networks at the NSC and Villa Marina will benefit visitors to the venues long after the Games are over. Manx Telecom - which is a Partner for the Games - has worked closely with the Department of Community, Culture and Leisure, Information Systems Division and Commonwealth Youth Games Committee in providing a wireless network for visiting media representatives who will be reporting on the Games, spectators who want to access results, and for competitors to keep in touch with relatives and friends. Using the Isle of Man Government’s existing IT network - which is provided by Manx Telecom - wireless networks have been created at the NSC and Villa Marina especially for the Games. But the networks will remain in place after the event and provide a legacy which will benefit the public. Mike Dee, Manx Telecom Managing Director, said: “We are delighted to support the Commonwealth Youth Games 2011, it promises to be a fantastic event and a great way to welcome many new visitors to the Island. We wanted to provide our technical expertise to help the Games’ organisers, but also to provide something which would last beyond the Games. The wireless networks we have created at the NSC and Villa Marina are the perfect way to achieve this goal.” In addition to being a Partner of the Games, and providing technical support, Manx Telecom has also encouraged staff to support the Games by volunteering for a variety of roles. Staff who have volunteered and need to take time off work will receive extra time off donated by Manx Telecom. The Commonwealth Youth Games 2011 runs from September 7th to 13th and includes competitions in seven sports - athletics, badminton, boxing, cycling, gymnastics, rugby 7s and swimming. Every participant will also receive a Manx Telecom Pay As You Go SIM card so they can keep in touch with home. Manx Telecom also sponsors the Island’s CYG rugby 7s squad and Team Manx Telecom members have been selected for the cycling squad. Tickets are available from the Welcome Centre at the Sea Terminal and the Villa Marina Reception or via the Ticketing Hotline on +44 (0)1624 600555. - ENDS -
