Mental Health Rehabilitation Services

by isleofman.com 1st September 2011
Within the Department of Social Care, Social Services are working with the Housing Division to provide a wide range of accommodation options for those who need care and support in order to live as independently as possible in their local community. This is the wish of the large majority of the people affected. In addition, it is far cheaper than the alternative of 24 hours a day, 7 days per week residential care. As a result, this integrated approach is delivering better services and better value for money. The Department of Social Care has reviewed its range of accommodation to ensure that it meets the varying and changing needs and aspirations of all vulnerable groups. The Department has developed plans to use existing properties at Tynwald Terrace, Strang to widen support options for people following an episode of mental ill-health. This has been done in collaboration with the Mental Health Service User Network, which ensures the Department listens directly to the views of its service users and so delivers more effective services. The development of Tynwald Terrace as supported living units will enable the Mental Health Service to provide continuity of support and care to people from the point of leaving in-patient care through to independent living in the community, enabling them to regain confidence and skills. The Minister for Social Care Hon Martyn Quayle said: “I am pleased that my Department is able to progress this initiative. The Tynwald Terrace development represents a key part of the Mental Health Service’s Rehabilitation Strategy and will be a significant step forward in further developing an innovative and progressive recovery process in line with best practice.” The Department’s Member for Social Services Mr Bill Malarkey said: “The use of Tynwald Terrace will extend the variety of rehabilitation and housing support available. The plans will simplify access, widen accommodation options and promote the recovery of patients. All of us could experience a period of mental ill health at some point in our lives and it is important that appropriate facilities are available to enable people to re-enter life in the community in a planned and supported manner”. - ENDS -
