The planned Cultural Day for athletes and the team and event officials has now been modified due to anticipated adverse weather conditions with high winds reported Island-wide.
The event was due to feature a Tin Bath competition as well as a motorcycle display and stunt riders. However, the visitors will still visit Castletown on the steam train from Douglas and will take part in a series of activities in Castle Rushen. The activities in the Square will also now not take place.
As a result of the change in the programme the event does not now require the planned road closure and the car park adjacent to Castletown Square will now also remain open.”
Geoff Karran, MBE, Chairman of the Isle of Man CYG 2011 Organising Committee commented:
“It’s a real shame that the full programme of events cannot take place but the conditions would not be appropriate for the event. However, our visitors and VIP’s will still get to experience the South of the Island and Island culture and we have moved as much of the activity as possible into Castle Rushen itself which will offer some shelter.”
The Closing Ceremony for teams and officials will still take place at the Villa Marina with speeches from Minister Cretney and Michael Fennell, the President of the Commonwealth Youth Games Federation.
Mr Fennell will then hand over the ceremonial Quaich, a Scottish Cup, symbolising love and friendship, to Samoa, hosts of the 2015 Commonwealth Youth Games. There will also be a firework display at 10.45pm on the Douglas Promenade Walkway to close the Games and Seven ‘fire’ drawings symbolising the seven sports that have taken place during the Games. This activity is open to the public.
