Commonwealth Games Federation President Praises Douglas’s ‘Warmth of Welcome’

by isleofman.com 15th September 2011
President of the Commonwealth Games Federation Michael Fennell has said the Isle of Man and Douglas in particular ‘could be justifiably proud’ for receiving its international guests so warmly and mounting the Commonwealth Youth Games so successfully. Mr Fennell was speaking at a reception for Commonwealth Youth Games’ team principals and organising committee representatives held in the Council chamber of Douglas town hall and hosted by Douglas Mayor, Councillor Ritchie McNicholl. In his welcome address Councillor McNicholl spoke of the Island’s sporting heritage, citing Tour de France star Manxman Mark Cavendish, who received the honorary freedom the borough earlier this year, as an example and went on to say that young people from the Isle of Man and across the Commonwealth ‘give us great cause for pride and optimism.’ During the reception the Mayor and Mayoress also met three-time world champion gymnast Beth Tweddle.
