As the archery outdoor season draws to a close, this week’s competition was a fun round devised by the late Nev Mason. Nev, a longbow archer, devised a handicap round (which is held annually) to encourage people to shoot their bows without aids ie. no stabilisers, no clickers, no sights and of course this excludes compound bows. On a pleasant Sunday morning, all five archers who turned out to shoot this round chose to shoot barebow, therefore no penalties were imposed for using any sighting aids. The distances were 60 yds and 40 yds, but using metric scoring. After taking advice, and using Thursday night’s Club night to practise the distances, the winner was Billy Lightfoot with a magnificent score of 475 points, some 37 points ahead of his nearest rival, Anne Rutland. In third place with 324 points and shooting his flatbow was Peter Mumford, closely followed by Jon Rutland on 322 points, and bringing up the rear was last year’s winner Tony Hartley with a score of 284 points. All enjoyed this fun light-hearted shoot. Billy will be presented with the much-admired Nev Mason Long Haul Trophy at the Prize Giving at the end of the Season.
This round completed the competition calendar for the outdoor season. Sunday next week will be dedicated to equipment maintenance at Ronaldsway.
The indoor season commences at Onchan Community Centre on Sunday 2 October, 10 am for 10.30 am, or 1.30 pm for 2 pm start. First Club Night will be on Thursday 6 October from 7 pm for Juniors and 8.30 pm for Seniors.
