Two newly refurbished steam railway saloon carriages will be officially launched on Friday 30 September as part of Isle of Man Railways’ new Rolling Stock event.
The celebrations include a Rolling Lunch which aims to give people the chance to host a business lunch with a difference in the open saloon carriages with waiter service and hot and cold snacks available. Alternatively people can take their own lunch on board and enjoy the special return trip to Castletown that will depart Douglas Station at 12.10pm and return by 1.40pm.
That evening (30 September) the new carriages will be part of the Rail Ale train departing Douglas Station at 6pm. Passengers must be over 18 to travel as drinks will be available from the bar carriage. The Rail Ale trip stops at Castletown (6.37pm) enabling people the option of exploring Castletown’s pubs or going on to Port Erin (7pm), with the return train departing Port Erin at 8pm, Castletown at 8.22pm and arriving back at Douglas at 9pm.
Hon David Cretney, Minister for Community, Culture and Leisure commented: ‘We know that people value and appreciate our historic railways and the Rolling Stock event is a way to celebrate the addition of these newly refurbished saloon carriages in our rolling stock with two fun events.
‘The availability of F.30 and F.32 will increase the number of open saloons to four carriages and one bar carriage, resulting in larger capacities for events such as Rail Ale, weddings and corporate events, which generate income for the Railways.’
Tickets to both events cost ?10 return for adults. Children are welcome on the Rolling Lunch train, tickets priced ?5 per child. Tickets are available from Douglas steam railway station and can be booked by phoning 673623. More information on the website: http://iombusandrail.info/rolling-stock.html.
Open saloon carriages have no individual compartments, allowing passengers to walk the full length and enter other saloon carriages whilst the train is in motion. The benefit of this is that large groups of people can interact and also gain access to other open saloons such as the bar carriage.
