Manx Election Special at iMuseum

by isleofman.com 22nd September 2011
Hot off the press and in the run up to the elections Explore Newspapers at the iMuseum present a Manx Election Special. Visitors can simply search for "iMuseum Manx Election" on iMuseum to uncover news about Manx elections from 1866 to 1956. iMuseum is home to Manx Newspapers from 1792 to 1960, amounting to nearly 400,000 pages of newsprint, available to browse and search by keyword. The iMuseum has the ability to store a selection of articles under certain keywords, making it easy to provide past information on the most relevant issues and events. Paul Weatherall, Library & Archive Services Officer says; “Manx National Heritage has pre-selected a number of articles from the iMuseum Newspaper collections that we hope will give a flavour of bygone election campaigns and stimulate people to see what they can uncover for themselves. Debates about “votes for women” may no longer be a hot topic but many election issues do not seem to have changed at all over the years.” The iMuseum, situated on Kingswood Grove, Douglas is just a short walk from the Manx Museum. Explore Newspapers is currently free to use when visiting the iMuseum in Douglas with a small charge for print-outs. It is planned to make the iMuseum content available online early in 2012. Online access to newspaper articles will require a subscription but will continue to be free within the iMuseum building on Kingswood Grove. iMuseum brings together a selection of archives, library and museum collections into one digital resource and the content will grow significantly over the coming months and years as more of the national collections are digitised. The iMuseum is open Wednesday to Saturday 10am to 5pm (until 7pm on Thursdays). See yourself as a politician? Take your seat with your unruly friends in the finely restored Old House of Keys debating chamber. Shape this Island’s future and introduce motorcycle racing to the Island’s open roads, decide whether women should get the vote and shout ‘aye’ for those in favour and ‘no’ for those against! Open until 30th October, sittings take place 11.15am and 3pm. Tickets are available from the Old Grammar School. ENDS
