Invitation To New Members as Choir Starts Season

by isleofman.com 28th September 2011
Do you sing in the shower or the car and wish you could join up with others to sing your heart out? Then the Friday Lunchtime Choir could be the outlet you are looking for. The community choir, formed by Maggie Richardson, Head of Music Service for the Department of Education and Children, welcomes all comers, regardless of experience. Two years after it started it is going from strength to strength, with more than 100 members, although not all of them make it to every rehearsal. The choir starts its third season on Friday 7th October. Rehearsals will again be held at the Salvation Army Citadel in Lord Street, Douglas, and newcomers will be made welcome. Sessions last half an hour so singers who are on an hour’s break from the office can head back to their desks on time. Maggie Richardson, a choral specialist, conducts the choir. She said: ‘It was formed to provide an opportunity for singers of all levels of experience and every session includes elements of voice training related to the songs we’re learning. ‘I try to choose music to appeal to everyone, including sacred music and folk and pop arrangements. We often sing in other languages and although singers are given music to follow, it doesn't matter if they can’t read music as each rehearsal is structured to support non-readers.’ This term the choir will be working towards a Christmas concert at lunchtime on December 9th. All proceeds are donated to charity. Membership of the choir is free of charge but members are requested to contribute 30p a week towards the use of the venue. For further information about the choir please contact the Music Centre on 686555, email music.admin@doe.sch.im or visit the Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/pages/Friday-Lunchtime-Choir/156393334395594 ENDS
