Golf trick shot and long drive record breaker Paul ‘The Striker’ Barrington entertained pupils at a special show held at Peel Golf Course. The former World Golf Trick Shot champion visited the Island as part of the annual Manx Telecom Golf Day which included a 45-minute show for Queen Elizabeth II High School pupils. Barrington entertained with a variety of trick shots including volleying golf balls with a driver, driving with a putter, hitting the ball overhead in a tennis style serve, and driving balls off the tee with two clubs at once. Barrington also demonstrated his ability with the driver - his personal record drive is 440 yards and he has twice been crowned British Long Drive Champion. Andy Scarlett, Head of CPD at Queen Elizabeth II High School, said the pupils had a great time. He commented:
“Paul’s show was fantastic and the pupils were thoroughly entertained by his amazing trick shots. Some of the pupils who have never played golf before are now thinking of taking up the game after being inspired by the trick shot show.”
Some of the school pupils and staff also got to have a go at some of the tricks performed by Paul, but they found that they were not as easy as he makes them look. The Bristol-based golf pro got the idea for a trick shot show after attending a friend’s wedding and doing a few party tricks. It was an instant hit. He was asked to attend another function and since then his show has taken him around the world. He has won long-drive and trick shot titles and made many TV appearances - including Sky TV’s Soccer AM where he won a special golf version of the show’s Skills School Challenge.
