The Broadway Cinema at the Villa Gaiety Complex in Douglas will soon be playing host to Albatross, the latest Manx-made film to be released by CinemaNX and Isle of Man Film. The film is released nation-wide on the 14th October 2011.
The film will be screened at the Broadway 9.30pm nightly from Friday 14th October to Thurs 20th October, and at 5pm daily on Sat 15th October and Sunday 16th October.
Albatross is a funny and moving coming-of-age story starring Sebastian Koch (The Lives of Others), Felicity Jones (Cemetery Junction) and Julia Ormond (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button). Also featured is rising star Jessica Brown-Findlay, famous
for her performance as Lady Sybill in hugely popular ITV drama series Downton Abbey. Jessica was selected as a leading light in Screen International’s prestigious UK Stars of Tomorrow 2011 list.
The story is set in and around the Cliff House Bed & Breakfast establishment, situated in an unnamed town along the sleepy south coast of England. The B&B is run by the dysfunctional Fischer family – father Jonathan (Koch), an author with writer’s block, and his frustrated wife Joa (Ormond). Their sensible sixth-former daughter Beth (Jones) becomes friends with local teenage rebel Emilia (Brown-Findlay), and soon starts getting into trouble. But she’s not the only Fischer who is led astray; Jonathan learns that Emelia is an aspiring writer and decides to offer her some ‘private tuition’…
Filmed in Autumn 2009 entirely against the backdrop of the Isle of Man’s stunning coastal scenery, the film has been described as My Summer of Love meets An Education. Writer Tamzin Rafn has also cites influence from the seaside-classic Wish You Were Here. The film is directed by BAFTA-nominated Niall MacCormick (Margaret Thatcher: The Long Road to Finchley) and produced by Adrian Sturges (The Disappearance of Alice Creed, The Escapist).
