Bugsy Malone

by isleofman.com 12th October 2011
Bugsy Malone is a 1976 musical film, very loosely based on events in New York City in the Prohibition era, specifically the exploits of gangsters like Al Capone and Bugs Moran, as dramatized in cinema. Featuring only child actors (with singing voices provided by adults), director Alan Parker lightened the subject matter considerably for the children's market; the film received a G rating, and is now one of the most well loved family films of all time. Gary Chatel Jude Fullerton Gena & James Turpin JT Productions As a team, we decided to produce an 'all children' show (with no adults) to showcase the young talent on the Island as well as develop their theatre skills. Auditions were in April and we had a great response with over 200 children at the auditions. It was a wonderful response and we could have easily cast the show twice. From the 200 children we chose 85 with 45 core children for every performance and two teams with alternate performances. We have been rehearsing since May with Modern & Tap dancing and the original 1920’s Charleston routines, lots of gangster action and not to mention the famous splurge guns. It will be a fun and active production sure to entertain the Manx audience (as well as the cast!) Bugsy Malone was last staged in the Gaiety Theatre around 12 years ago, but not to this scale, the audience can expect all the great characters from the film and those well loved pedal cars and splurge Guns will be making an appearance, with the famous splurge fight right at the end, we have our very own Grand Slam girls and our little Jazz Babes joining together in Fat Sams Grand Slam! Gary and Gena have taken the show and put their own 21st Century modern twist but insuring that the outline of the original is kept. The Manx public should come along and support this production as there has never been one like it! JT Productions is a new fresh & modern company and I think the public should come along and see what we have to offer and that we are not afraid to work with 85 young performers…..you know what they say, ‘Never work with children or animals’ but I think we have done a great Job and cant wait for this exciting show to raise the roof at the Gaiety. Its been a journey to remember from all aspects of the production, we thank all the parents and Children for their hard work over the last 6 months! ENDS
