Running from Wednesday 19th October to Saturday 22nd October is the Manx Gilbert and Sullivan’s Society’s production of the Gondoliers, the Society’s 22nd show in the Gaiety Theatre.
Set in 1920’s Venice and the (fictional) island of Barataria, this comedy musical tells the entertaining story of how two recently married and happy go lucky Gondoliers came to be mistaken as the King of Barataria. Further complications arise as they find out that, as the King of Barataria, one of them has been married since birth to the daughter of the Duke of Plaza Toro – making one of the Gondoliers an unknowing bigamist. Fortunately, with the usual deft plot twists that are hallmark of G & S a happy ending is eventually achieved for all.
As one of the top five shows in the G & S repertoire the Gondoliers is a classic mixture of Gilbert’s satire on the class structure and some of Sullivan’s finest music. The music itself, featuring such well known songs as “Take a pair of sparkling eyes” and “Dance a Cachucha”, exhibits influences on Sullivan from the French stately gavotte, the Spanish cachucha, the Italian saltarello and tarantella, and, from Venice itself the Venetian barcarolle.
The Society’s Chairman, Karl Cubbon, encourages people to come along saying:
‘Produced by a NODA award winning Director, Val Cowley, this will be a fantastic evening’s entertainment suitable for the whole family. A funny and lively show, I feel this is a performance people cannot fail to enjoy.’
He also noted:
‘I would encourage people to dine at the Italian Job restaurant prior to the performance as, by showing a ticket for that night’s performance, the diner will be eligible for a discount on the cost of their meal.’
Tickets are priced from ?16, with concessions for Senior Citizens and Students and are available now from the Welcome Centre, online from http://www.gov.im/villagaiety/, or by ringing the Gaiety Theatre Box Office directly on 694555.
