RNLI volunteers caused a stir at The Strand Shopping Centre when they abseiled 60 feet from the top floor. The Dare To Live ‘free fall’ abseil uses a technique similar that used by SAS units when being deployed by helicopter, but on November 5 members of the public will be able to have a go under the expert guidance from The Children’s Centre’s Mobex team.
The challenge is to abseil 60 feet from the top floor inside The Strand Shopping Centre in and in the process raise funds for the Island’s leading charity for children and families. RNLI volunteers, assisted by Mobex experts, put on a demonstration to show how it’s done to promote next month’s event.
In 2010 The Children’s Centre organised a charity abseil from the top of the RBS International building in Douglas, which was from the same height. But Mark Eastham, Fundraising Co-ordinator for The Children’s Centre, says The Strand Shopping Centre event will be a different experience as participants will be doing a ‘free fall’ abseil. He said:
“This is a unique opportunity to take part in the Island’s highest indoor abseil. It is a free fall abseil meaning participants abseil down a rope without a wall which makes it more scary and a bit faster than normal abseiling. We are hoping that some of the 90 participants who took part in the abseil from the RBS building will return - but it’s also a great chance for anyone to have a go at abseiling for the first time.”
There is no age limit for taking part, but anyone under the age of 16 will need parental consent. Participants pay a ?30 deposit and promise to raise a minimum of ?100 - the ?30 deposit is included in the ?100 total.
