Ramsey Town Commissioners have pledged their continued support for Walk and Talk, the exercise programme led by Manx Sport and Recreation, part of the Department of Community, Culture and Leisure, and supported by the Department of Health.
Designed to promote general health and fitness the supervised exercise programme, launched in 1999, sees participants walk at their own pace around a designated circuit which, in Ramsey, is the perimeter of Mooragh Park. A record is kept of the distance walked at each session, with prizes awarded for completing milestone distances.
Co-ordinator for the Ramsey sessions is Lesley Patterson who said: ‘Between 50 to 80 people attend our sessions whatever the weather, as we maintain there’s no such thing as “bad” weather, only “bad” clothing, with some of our walkers having completed more than 1000 miles. Walk and Talk is a great way for people to exercise gradually as well as to meet and socialise at the same time, because the talking is just as important as the walking.’
Ramsey Town Commissioners’ lead member for parks and leisure Kevin Crowe said: ‘The Commissioners applaud Manx Sport and Recreation’s initiative to encourage general fitness and wellbeing. We were the first local authority in the Island to provide outdoor exercise equipment for adults, which we installed in Mooragh Park, so we are pleased to offer our support of the Walk and Talk sessions.’
Manx Sport and Recreation’s sports development officer Gianni Epifani said: ‘We are grateful to Ramsey Town Commissioners for their continued support and for making the splendid surroundings of Mooragh Park available for what is a sociable and fun way to keep fit.’
Walk and Talk sessions in Ramsey are held on Wednesdays from 10 to 11.30am in Mooragh Park with registration at the adjacent Ramsey Rugby Club. ?1.50 per session, including refreshments. For further details visit www.gov.im/sport, enquiries@msr.dtl.gov.im.
