Fireworks Spectacular Promised for Douglas

by isleofman.com 27th October 2011
Douglas Borough Council’s fireworks display, sponsored by Celton Manx, will take place on Saturday November 5. Council leader Councillor David Christian said: ‘This year’s event promises to be, as always, a spectacular event thanks to generous sponsorship from Celton Manx. There will, however, be one major difference from last year in that, owing to unfavourable tide times over that weekend, the fireworks display will be fired from a barge in the bay. While this means there will be no bonfire on the beach, the display will attract a wider audience as the fireworks will be able to be seen from anywhere along the full length of the promenade. ‘In keeping with our “safety first” message urging spectators not to bring sparklers or any other fireworks onto the site we are pleased that a number of staff members from Alliance and Leicester International will be handing out glow sticks in exchange for a donation to the Mayoral charity appeal fund. ‘The Council was determined, despite these difficult economic times, to stage what is one of the town’s most popular community events. To this end partnering with Celton Manx has ensured a large-scale display that will not only have tremendous visual impact but also provide spectators the safest and most secure surroundings in which to enjoy the celebrations.’ Executive director of Celton Manx, Bill Mummery said: ‘It is fantastic to be involved with one of the most anticipated events in the Douglas community calendar. The fireworks are always extremely popular in Douglas and I am very much looking forward to being there on the evening and helping to judge the guy competition. Celton Manx is dedicated to supporting the community in which we operate. These Douglas Borough Council events are a great way for us to celebrate our relocation to Douglas.’ 3FM will compere and provide entertainment and entries for the Best Dressed Guy competition - for which the prizes are ?100, ?50 and ?25 for first, second and third place respectively - must be submitted to 3FM’s marquee at the War Memorial no later than 5.45pm. Judging will be by His Worship the Mayor of Douglas Councillor Ritchie McNicholl JP at approximately 6.45pm and the fireworks display will be fired at 7pm and is expected to finish by 7.30pm. Catering outlets will be located in the vicinity of the War Memorial. Some short-term restrictions will see parking suspended on the seaward carriageway between Broadway and the War Memorial and use of the cycleway suspended from Broadway to the northern end of the sunken gardens. In the interests of safety spectators are requested not to bring pets or their own fireworks, including sparklers, onto the site. ENDS
