Wurlitzer Winter Series: December 2011

by isleofman.com 1st November 2011
The Isle of Man Wurlitzer will once again be heard in series of concerts leading up to Christmas. Series co-ordinator Jonathan King said: “Last year’s Wurlitzer Carols series was a resounding success and I am delighted to be able to continue and build on the tradition. It is a particular pleasure to be able to share the console of the Wurlitzer this year with at least three other Island resident organists: Margaret Cubbon, John Riley and Jimmy Thomson. Free lunchtime concerts with carol singing for all will once again be at the heart of the series. Once again there will be musical contributions from a variety of local performers including children and young people. New this year are two extra Wurlitzer events. On Wednesday 7th December Margaret Cubbon presents an extended afternoon concert, commencing at 2pm. On Wednesday 21st December there is a “late-night shopping” event featuring John Riley, commencing at 7pm. I am grateful to these performers for giving freely of their time and talents. Thanks to audiences’ generosity, last year’s Christmas series of four concerts raised ?770 for good causes and the 2011 summer series raised ?900. The evening of Wednesday 14th December is reserved for Len Rawle’s traditional Christmas concert. Len, who is responsible for the recent restoration of the Isle of Man Wurlitzer and is a regular visitor to the Island, was given an MBE in the New Year Honours earlier this year. The opportunity to hear Len is truly not to be missed. All music lovers should book early for this event and avoid disappointment.” The full line-up for the 2011 Wurlitzer Winter Series is as follows: Monday 5 December 1pm Jonathan King Wednesday 7 December 2pm Margaret Cubbon Monday 12 December 1pm Jimmy Thomson Wednesday 14 December 7.30pm Len Rawle Monday 19 December 1pm Jonathan King Wednesday 21 December 7pm John Riley Admission is free and there will be a charity collection on each occasion. The exception to this is Len Rawle’s concert for which tickets priced at ?10 may be purchased by telephoning 600555. The Isle of Man Wurlitzer was installed at Summerland in 1989. Following the closure of that site, the Wurlitzer was repaired and overhauled by internationally renowned expert Len Rawle, and installed as the focal point of the newly restored Villa Marina Arcade. The inaugural concert was given by Len on 17th December 2009. ENDS
