by isleofman.com 4th November 2011
The next Friends of Garretts Gallery Exhibition starts on Saturday 5th November 2011 at Garretts Gallery, Unit 11, Kirby Farm Industrial Estate, Vicarage Road, Braddan (opposite Kirby Garden Centre). The Gallery is open from 10am – 6pm Sat/Tues/Wed until 30th November 2011. Karl Garrett, Proprietor of Garretts Gallery says, "This is the third Friends' exhibition at Garretts Gallery since we opened in April 2011. This event is an opportunity to see the work of yet another excellent line-up of Artists - and although Garretts Gallery is new on the scene, the support from my fellow artists, art lovers and potential investors to date has been really encouraging." The Featured Artists are: Dave Bell: Dave has always been fascinated with anything he sees: stunning landscapes, high-rise buildings, or a life story written on someone’s face. Since he picked up his first Digital SLR back in 2007 it now goes everywhere with him. Dave has no formal qualifications in photography and has learned through trial and error and tutorials. Dave says, “I’d like to think my work on display is as pleasing to the viewer as it is to me.” Dave was born and raised in Dumfries, Scotland before permanently moving to the Isle of Man eleven years ago. Now happily married to his loving wife, Kerrie and blessed with a beautiful daughter, Molly. Karl Garrett: Karl's work is a creation of his inner thoughts, feelings, memories, experiences and moods. He uses texture and movement to make each piece unique. Being dyslexic, writing is not Karl's forte so he finds painting is a great way to express himself. Juliet Petrarulo Juliet has lived on the Island for 28 years. , She is currently studying for her BA (Hons) degree in Fine Art at the Isle of Man College in collaboration with Liverpool John Moores University. Her paintings explore her memories, experiences and surroundings, the natural colours and the ever changing light. She says, “I watch the sky turning to dusk. The sea and sky have no edges. The shape, density and texture of rocks, all intrigue me. A piece of driftwood floating on the sea or the sole of a child's shoe washed up on the shingle. Watching birds blown about in the wind and the shape of the trees on the Island all have a story and place in my paintings. The inspiration on this island is never ending and will continue to inspire me.” Sarah Quayle-Smith Sarah Quayle-Smith is a former pupil of Castle Rushen High School. She studied Art at Isle of Man College and Wolverhampton University. She has recently become interested in painting Manx scenes/images that are abstract in content and this has been the catalyst for her work to be produced as prints. Sarah has produced a series of images that are bold, colourful and striking to look at using acrylic paints to make the paintings come alive; she has worked on blocks of colour to try and illustrate the images as she sees them in her head. Hazel Walsh Experience the desolation of some of Mann’s forgotten homes and industrial buildings in this haunting display of photographs. During the past 12 months Sayle Gallery Artist-in-Residence, Hazel Walsh, has travelled the Island photographing ‘Mann, Abandoned.’ Derelict and ruined buildings, long forgotten and left to crumble to dust, provided the inspiration for these photographs and accompanying book and website www.mannabandoned.co.uk. Hazel studied a BA (Hons) in Professional Photographic Imaging at Reading College and then completed a part-time MA in Art, Design and Media at Portsmouth University. Since returning to the Island Hazel has been teaching photography part-time at the Isle of Man College. She commenced her residency at the Sayle Gallery in September 2010 and in the future hopes to study towards a PhD. Images from ‘Mann, Abandoned’ have been previously exhibited at Peel Centenary Centre, St Patricks Church, Jurby and the Crypt Gallery and Candid Arts Trust in London. ENDS
