Douglas Borough Council Remembrance Sunday service

The 2011 Douglas Borough Council Remembrance Sunday service will be held on Sunday November 13. A parade will form at Market Hill at 9.15 am and move off at 9.30 am through Duke Street, Strand Street, Castle Street and Marina Road, pausing at the Regent Street, Granville Street and St Thomas’ Walk junctions for those members of the public wishing to join at those points. On arrival at St Thomas’ Church, the parade will file through the Finch Road entrance. The church service will begin at 10am conducted by the Venerable Archdeacon Andrew Brown, with the address delivered by the Vicar of St. Thomas’, Rev. Ian Brady. The service will end at 10.40 am to allow time for those present to parade to the War Memorial in time to observe the two minutes’ silence at 11am. (marked by maroons), which will be followed by the laying of wreaths. The final parade will then form on the Promenade roadway alongside the War Memorial, and after the salute is taken opposite the Gaiety Theatre by His Worship the Mayor, Councillor Ritchie McNicholl JP., accompanied by Mr Peter Fletcher, President of the Royal British Legion, Douglas Branch, the parade will proceed into Marina Road and retrace the route to Market Hill. In the event of adverse weather any or all of the parades may be abandoned. However, the observance of the two minutes’ silence at the War Memorial will proceed. Members of local organisations, both military and civil, and the general public are invited to participate in any or all of the event. Limited road closures will operate at varying times between 9.30 am and 12 noon, affecting the lower end of Finch Road, Church Road Marina and Harris Promenade. (Details available on request).
