Remembrance Week At The iMuseum

by isleofman.com 8th November 2011
This week Manx National Heritage hosts a series of events and activities at the iMuseum to commemorate the 90th Anniversary of the Royal British Legion with all donations to the Poppy Appeal. On Thursday 10th November at 10am to 11am join MNH curator Matthew Richardson as he explores ‘Voices from Dunkirk’, the role of the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company and its crews, in the evacuation of Dunkirk in the Second World War. In May and June 1940, the survivors of the British army, which had been shattered by the German blitzkrieg, made their way to the French channel coast hoping for rescue. Among the civilian ships mobilised to save them were those of the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company. Bravely their crews ventured into the burning port, time and again, to save as many men as they could. Admission is free – donations are welcome to the Poppy Appeal. On Saturday the whole family can participate in a Poppy Art Workshop at the iMuseum. Manx National Heritage are working alongside the Royal British Legion and Mannin Art Group so visitors can create an individual art piece, and contribute to our collaborative silk painting to display in the iMuseum. Admission is a ?3 donation to the Poppy Appeal. All are welcome to drop in between 10am and midday, no booking required. At 2pm to 3pm on Saturday 12th November MNH assistant curator Hannah Gerrard presents ‘Lest we Forget: Memorials and their Meanings’. Learn the history of Remembrance Day and explore international memorials and their meanings. Hannah will also focus on a selection of Manx memorials, including the artistic influence of Archibald Knox. Admission is free – donations are welcome to the Poppy Appeal. iMuseum is a fantastic resource to discover military history, allowing you to share your stories of ancestors in the military service and search newspapers for stories reported from the time. To commemorate Remembrance Week, a number of newspaper articles reporting Manx servicemen killed in action have been selected. iMuseum also holds war memorial records for Douglas and the Island’s parishes, including the names of those individuals commemorated. You can see photographs of war memorials from the National Archive and explore museum collections within the Island at War topic. The iMuseum is open Wednesday to Saturday 10am to 5pm, and until 7pm on Thursday. Please note there is no pre-booking required. Places are limited for the talks so please arrive early to avoid disappointment. Also in Remembrance Week is ‘The Angel and the Fallen’ Remembrance Concert, its title inspired by a famous statue in France, taking place on Friday evening at the Villa Marina, in the presence of His Excellency the Lieutenant Governor. An 'Angel' concert has been performed in all the great cathedrals of England to celebrate the 90th Anniversary Year of the Royal British Legion. Our Island 'Angel' is an all Island event in which the young and the military veteran community are taking part. Tickets are ?10 and can be purchased from the Villa Box Office. ENDS
