Absolute Scaffolding 23 v Anglo Manx Electrical Services 22 by Colette Gambell
Absolute Scaffolding edged out Anglo Manx in a tense and toughly contested victory in the final few minutes of the game.
Absolute Scaffolding came away with the all-important 4 points but it was Anglo Manx who dominated the first quarter. Anglo opened up scoring with shooters Sarah Kewley (GS) & Lisa Fitzgerald (GA) barely missing the net. Absolute conceded 3 goals before stepping up in a more organised fashion retaliating by evening the scoreboard with some beautiful shots by Penny Doran (GA) & Claire Fletcher (GS). Anglo’s tight defence soon grew wise as Linda Green & Helen Warner intercepted Absolute’s feeds into the circle, swiftly moving the ball up court into their attacking half and ultimately into the capable hands of their shooters. The quarter ended 6-4 in Anglo’s favour but despite
Absolute Scaffolding came back with a vengeance with the dynamic Doran/Fletcher duo really finding form netting the next 6 goals. Absolute looked sharp across the pitch as Toria Newbolt (C) and Rachel Bailey (WA) timed their movements perfectly and passed accurately swiftly delivering into the attacking circle. Play centred in the Absolute attacking half but a missed opportunity saw the ball returned by the Anglo defence into the shooters hands resulting in the first Anglo goal this quarter. The tables turned yet again as Absolute struggled to maintain dominance, but it was short lived with Lindsey Plant (GK) really making an impact with some sharp interceptions.
Gill Cunningham’s (GD) & Plant’s pressured defence forced Anglo to concede errors and lose composure just enough for Absolute to regain control but as true fighters Anglo fought on to squeeze a few extra goals taking the half time score to 10-12 in Absolute’s favour.
The third quarter was a demonstration of intensity from the Northerners as Absolute stormed their way into an ever more powerful position. They looked to be the clear winners but in a game that was anything but predictive, Anglo increased effort and reduced the margin to within a point in the final minutes of the game. Anglo’s Centre Netty Mooney was true to form with strong competent passing and speed and fitness to rival the best. Errors were forced around the Absolute circle as Anglo challenged to the death. The scores were neck-a-neck as both teams continued to level the scoreline. Despite their utmost commitment and some frustrating and tense minutes as the game drew to a close, Anglo just couldn’t quite grasp the win. Absolute notched up the extra goal moments before the final whistle to ensure they went away with the win not a draw.
