The Department of Health recently expanded its Hear2Help Service, which is now also available at Peel Medical Centre. This new scheme which has been in operation since August 2011 provides support, maintenance and advice on Hearing Aids for the residents of the West of the Island.
Every Wednesday afternoon between 1pm and 4pm, Peel Medical Centre facilitates a drop in Hearing Aid Support Clinic. This initiative is supported by the Noble's Hospital Volunteer Service. The volunteers who provide this service have undergone extensive training on the Island, via a course provided by the Royal National Institute for Deaf People, now called Action on Hearing Loss, which is validated by the Open College Network. This development was also supported by the Audiology Department at Noble’s Hospital, and enables volunteers to assist with minor repairs, re-tubing and the supply of batteries for the full range of hearing aids issued on the NHS.
Minister for Health, David Anderson MHK, said: “This addition of the Hear2Help Clinic at Peel Medical Centre further enhances the standard of care which is provided by the Department in the West of the Island. The Hear2Help volunteer initiative is a clear example of different areas of the Department working together to meet customers’ expectations and needs. The recently opened Peel Medical Centre, a purpose built facility, is already enabling us to develop and deliver a wider range of services, closer to the local community.”
Vivien Corlett along with other volunteers will be happy to help any patient, their relative or carer. There is no appointment system and patients are asked to drop in if they require assistance with their Hearing Aid.
Alison Lester, Volunteer Services Manager at Noble’s Hospital said: “This fantastic project has been in place in the West since August 2011 and we have received some very positive feedback from a number of patients regarding the service and the convenience of the clinic being in Peel. The volunteers, who are expertly trained, continue to enhance the services which are provided by Noble’s Hospital Volunteers.”
Stephen Griffiths, Head of Audiology said: “The placement of Hear2Help Volunteers in Peel is great for local residents, who would normally have to travel to Noble's Hospital for re-tubing and batteries. Patients who need more specialist help such as re-tuning of the hearing aids or ear-mould impressions will continue to visit Noble's Hospital.”
Janece Pugh, Peel Medical Centre Practice Manager, said: “We are pleased to be able to facilitate this extra out-reach clinic which will add to the services offered to Peel residents.”
