Chief Minister Welcomes South Korean Ambassador

by isleofman.com 15th November 2011
Chief Minister Allan Bell MHK has reaffirmed the Isle of Man’s commitment to developing its economic links with countries around the world. He said the Island had an important role to play in the global economy and would continue to foster good international relations in order to encourage more business and investment opportunities. Mr Bell emphasised the Isle of Man’s reputation as a responsible, cooperative and well-regulated nation as he welcomed a visit by the South Korean Ambassador to the UK, His Excellency Choo Kyu-ho. Ambassador Choo was accompanied by his wife and by Minister Counsellor Kim Yong-jin (Finance) and Counsellor Shin Jae-shik (Science and Technology) on a two-day visit to the Isle of Man. The South Korean delegation was given an overview of the Manx economy during meetings with the Chief Minister, Economic Development Minister John Shimmin, Treasury Minister Eddie Teare and senior Government officers. The Island’s successful policy of economic diversification was highlighted during a series of presentations, with the South Korean visitors gaining an insight into the financial services industry along with thriving niche sectors such as high-tech manufacturing, space commerce and clean tech. The Chief Minister said: ‘It is an honour to welcome Ambassador Choo and the South Korean delegation to the Island. South Korea is the fourth largest economy in Asia and, like the Isle of Man, has weathered the global economic downturn well. I look forward to further strengthening the alliance between our two countries as part of the Island’s ongoing strategy to enhance its international profile.’ Ambassador Choo said: ‘I have been particularly impressed by the Isle of Man’s good governance, its creativity in terms of developing its economy, and its openness with the outside world. It has been a very productive visit and I hope it will be the beginning of a mutually beneficial relationship between the Isle of Man and the Republic of Korea.’ As well as attending a number of official engagements, the South Korean delegation also took the opportunity to experience the Isle of Man’s unique culture and heritage.
