Calling all football fanatics for a day of football fun at the Manx Museum! On Saturday 26th November the Manx Museum is hosting ‘Football Focus’ as part of their current ‘Sporty Saturday’ programme of events. At 11am join football historians Eric Clague and Paul Hatton as they talk about the history of football on the Isle of Man. They will explore how the minority sport of soccer football played by a small number in the 1880’s became the most popular team sport on the Isle of Man, with over 5000 registered players in 2011. There will also be an opportunity to learn more about the history of the Isle of Man Football Association’s Hospital and Railway Cups, both of which are on display in the Museum’s ‘Our Sporting Life’ exhibition.
At 2pm female freestyle soccer star, Sara Ismail-Sutton will be giving a demonstration of her amazing football skills in the Manx Museum exhibition gallery. During the afternoon Sara will be joined by members of the highly successful Isle of Man Women’s Football Team, who will compete against visitors in our football challenge using the exhibition’s interactive gaming zone. Members of the team will also be on hand to talk about their recent successes at the Island Games and will explain how to get involved with ladies football on the Island.
Both the lecture and the freestyle soccer demonstrations are free events, but we ask participants to arrive early to avoid disappointment. Visit the website www.storyofmann.com for the full Sporty Saturday’s programme. ‘Our Sporting Life’ exhibition is open Monday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm at the Manx Museum.
