The Permaculture Association Isle of Man has added a selection of DVDs to its extensive collections of
books housed in Castletown and Ramsey public libraries. The films cover a range of topics including projects from around the world that draw on Permaculture design.
Permaculture design draws upon observations and inspirations from the natural world to develop integrated systems that provide for our needs of food, shelter, energy and community in ways that are healthy and efficient. Permaculture design methods can be used to improve the quality and productivity of our individual lives, our society and our environment.
A key title in the collection is ‘The Global Gardener’ by one of the founders of Permaculture – Bill Molliinson. It is a series of four half-hour programs on one DVD. Each episode looks at examples in different bioregions: In the Tropics - Mollison introduces the basic principles, and shows results in Australia, India, and Zimbabwe. He then visits arid lands and the reversal of desertification in Arizona, Botswana and Australia. From cooler climates there are examples of Permaculture in Europe, Tasmania, and the San Juan Islands in Washington State. Finally he looks at urban Permaculture both in New York City and Harare, Zimbabwe.
Two DVDs featuring the innovative and down to earth Austrian farmer Sepp Holzer demonstrate that good design, which mimics nature, can have hugely productive results, even at 1100-1500 metres above sea level in the Alps.
Meanwhile ‘The Power of Community – How Cuba Survived Peak Oil’ offers insights and lessons to our economy as we struggle with the ever rising cost of fossil fuels. And nearer to home, the British expert in agroforestry, Martin Crawford shares the secrets of forest gardening – a Permaculture design method to produce an abundance of food in amazing gardens.
These latest additions to the collections of books can be borrowed by all members of either library with their normal card as well as members of the Permacuture Association. The DVDs follow the introduction last year of OWL electricity monitors, two of which are available to borrow, free from each library.
The Isle of Man Permaculture Association is a registered Educational Charity.
