Otherworld – The Isle of Mist

by isleofman.com 23rd November 2011
Adrian Bailey has written a children’s book, Otherworld – The Isle of Mist, to raise money for our children’s hospice – Rebecca House which is you probably already know is only partially funded by the Isle of Man Government and relies on the generosity of the Manx people to provide such a valuable service. Otherworld – The Isle of Mist is being published in the UK and the USA by local publishers MP Publishing but it is being launched is at the Isle of Man Hospice Christmas Fair at the Villa Marina on Sunday the 27th of November. There are 5000 copies of a special edition, exclusive to the Isle of Man, which I have already paid to have printed so that all the money raised can go to Rebecca House. There are 2500 hardbacks and 2500 paperbacks and if we sell them all we will have raised ?50,000. I will also be attempting the Guinness World Record for the Largest Book Signing to try and gain extra publicity for the book. This is because all my royalties from the sale of the book in the UK, and MP Publishing's net profits, will also be donated to Rebecca House. Otherworld – The Isle of Mist tells the story of a magical island, which funnily enough bares more than a striking resemblance to the Isle of Man, and has been written for children and adults alike. It tells the story of Wally Gobbett, a fifteen year old apprentice conservator who unearths a forgotten medieval manuscript, The Secret Chronicle of the Isle of Mist, hidden in the basement of the British Library in London. This Secret Chronicle exposes another side to the Isle’s history - a story of magic, witches, fairies and giants that the monk who wrote it, Brother Brian the Blessed, wasn’t permitted to record in the real chronicle. Pursued by the agents of a sinister organisation known as ‘The Order’, who want the Secret Chronicle for themselves, Wally is forced to flee to the mysterious Isle of Mist where he discovers a secret community of witches and wizards, ruled over by the powerful sorcerer - Manannan Mac Lir. With the help of an unlikely group of friends, Wally then has to battle dragons, vicious hobgoblins and the agents of The Order as he tries to solve the riddle of the Secret Chronicle and aid the sorcerer Manannan in his quest to vanquish the evil that threatens to destroy the place where the power of magic comes from – the Otherworld. Otherworld– The Isle of Mist is aimed at children of all ages, and draws heavily on Manx history, culture, folklore and traditions for its inspiration. The launch for is taking place downstairs in the Villa Marina’s Promenade Suite from 12 pm onwards (we are asking people to 'Follow the Fairy' as we will have illustrated signs up) and the theme of the launch is Manx Folklore and Fairytales. Otherworld – The Isle of Mist will be on sale at ?11.99 for a very collectable and reasonably priced hardback, which would make an ideal Christmas present, and ?7.99 for the paperback. Both versions are special editions exclusively printed for the Isle of Man and because the costs of production have already been covered, people are basically donating money to Rebecca House and getting a free book. In addition, as a special edition of the first edition, the hardback (which is only being sold on the Isle of Man) will be a collector’s item and getting it signed and being part of the world record attempt will only increase its value. Otherworld – The Isle of Mist is a Manx book, based on Manx culture and written for the Manx people to raise money for a Manx charity. The illustrator Thomas Egan is Manx, the publishing company is Manx and although I’m not Manx, I can pretend to be if you like. As far as I know, nobody has ever done a charity book like this and we desperately need to make sure that the whole Island knows about it to make it a success. If we can sell all the 5000 Manx copies in a week, the book will chart on the UK bestsellers list and any UK sales will bring in more money for Rebecca House. Also if we sell all 5000 copies, we will have sold more copies of Otherworld per household in the Isle of Man, than Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone has sold in the UK. So may I thank you in advance for your support and I look to meeting you in the Promenade Suite at the Villa Marina on Sunday the 27th of November.
