Dyslexia Fundraising Day

by isleofman.com 23rd November 2011
Staff go Back to Front and raise funds and awareness for Manx Dyslexia Association Sue Rutter, chair of the Manx Dyslexia Association, visited staff from One Accounts Limited at their Douglas office to receive the good news that staff had raised ?539.74 for the charity. Sue accepted the cheque on behalf of the Association and expressed her gratitude for their support. One Accounts raised the money during a fundraising day held in celebration of its first anniversary. The theme chosen was Back to Front and staff started the day with Back to Front roles and responsibilites. The directors manned reception, made drinks and did the shredding while junior staff sat in the big chairs with their feet up. At lunchtime One Accounts staff were joined by other ICM group colleagues for a street collection in back to front costumes. Finally, a coffee morning was held in the afternoon with fabulous home made cakes for sale and games such as Wrap the Parcel and an 'unjumble the words' quiz. The organisers were keen to raise money but also raise awareness of dyslexia amongst staff. Sue Rutter, joined staff and tested their memory with some games in order to highlight the issues those with dyslexia can experience at school and in the workplace. Mary Furlong of One Accounts, told us: "It was such a great way to celebrate our first anniversary and I would just like to thank all those who participated and donated. While we were out in the centre of Douglas doing the street collection it was amazing how many people stopped and told us about their personal experience of dyslexia. Sue had told us that 1 person in every 10 is dyslexic and now I can quite believe that. We will certainly continue in our support of the charity and help as much as we can in raising awareness amongst the local community." As a result of this collaboration, Jooles Morrison, who helped organise the event, has been asked by Sue to become a charity committee member.
