Jeriel Bacani Is Appointed Lieutenant Governor’s Cadet

by isleofman.com 24th November 2011
Ramsey teenager has been appointed by Lieutenant Governor Adam Wood as his St John Ambulance cadet for 2011/12. Jeriel Bacani, 17, is a member of the Ramsey Cadet Division, and took part in this year’s Commonwealth Youth Games as a youth first aider. Jeriel, of Brookfield Crescent, is in her last year of sixth form at Ramsey Grammar School, where she is studying towards A levels. She plans to go to university and says her experience with St John Ambulance, which she only joined this year, will stand her in good stead. Being the Lieutenant Governor's cadet involves attending many social events at Government House –Christmas, TT and MGP receptions and many more. St John Ambulance holds an internal competition among cadets to decide on the two names that will go forward to His Excellency for him to select from. His Excellency appoints two cadets a year – one from St John Ambulance and one from the cadet forces in the Island. Jeriel’s predecessor as the St John Ambulance cadet to His Excellency was Liz Coase, 18, of Douglas. Liz has been a member of St John Ambulance since she joined the Badgers at the age of six in Manchester. When she moved to the Island, she joined Onchan Cadets and she now helps lead a Cadet Division. She has achieved the Cadets’ highest award, the Grand Prior Award. Liz, a student at King William’s College, said: ‘As well as representing St John Ambulance, which was a great privilege, my time as the Lieutenant Governor's cadet was great fun. ‘This year was one of many opportunities that were opened up to me through my membership of St John Ambulance. Being a member not only teaches you valuable skills in first aid but also gives you skills in life and broadens your outlook.’ For information about joining St John Ambulance’s youngest first aiders, the Badgers (aged five to 10), or its Cadets (aged 10+), ring 01624 674387.
