Police in the West of the Island are investigating two instances of criminal damage which has been caused to areas of fencing belonging to the Forestry Amenity and Lands Directorate.
In the first incident, which occurred sometime between the 1st November and 16th November, sections of wooden fence and rails which had been placed out with a ‘road closed sign’ were smashed and driven over. These had been placed out at the junction of the Baltic Road and Slieau Curn Roads which are both Green Lanes on the Michael Hills. The fencing and sign had been placed out as part of the green lane seasonal closure. This location is remote and only accessible via the Green Lanes themselves.
In the second incident, which occurred sometime between the 12th and 20th November, fencing was broken to the side of the locked gate to Beckwith’s mine in Glen Rushen. Associated to this damage was evidence that motorcycles had accessed the disused mine workings via the broken fencing and been scrambling around the area. Fresh damage consistent with motorcycle and 4 wheel drive vehicle use was also caused to the open heathland outside the entrance to Beckwith’s mine.
PC Ian Scott from the Western Neighbourhood Policing Team is investigating the incidents.
“Although both of these areas are remote, they are in frequent use from many persons accessing the areas legitimately both on foot and with vehicles and I would appeal to anyone witnessing such behaviour to report it. I would also like to remind people that aside from the obvious acts of vandalism to the fencing and signs, it is an offence to drive on closed roads or drive a vehicle without lawful authority on any open land. Offenders can expect to face prosecution”
