The Island’s biggest showcase of employment and training opportunities, held yesterday, proved valuable for students, jobseekers and those seeking to switch careers. Employment and Skills 2011 took place at the Villa Marina and attracted thousands of visitors. The event, hosted by the Departments of Economic Development (DED) and Education and Children (DEC) was attended by 41 employers from a diverse range of trades and professions, several of them first-time exhibitors. The DED’s JobCentre, Careers Guidance Service, Disability Employment Service and Training Services teams were on hand to provide tailored advice and options. Around 860 students from the Island’s secondary schools attended the event ahead of making vital GCSE and A-level option choices. Many returned after school with their parents for a longer look round. Peter Karran MHK, Minister for Education and Children, said the Isle of Man Government needed to do everything it could to provide opportunities for those young people not in employment, education or training. The event provided a useful opportunity for them to explore their options. Laurence Skelly MHK, Member of DED with responsibility for employment, said: ‘Employment and Skills is one of our most important events of the year and I am pleased that so many students and jobseekers took the opportunity to attend. The event promotes the range of career opportunities that exist in our diverse economy and gives invaluable access to help and advice. ‘I hope that meeting representatives from the many businesses across the Isle of Man the event helped individuals to make choices on their future careers.’ The DED and DEC thanked employers who took time out of their schedules to plan for and attend the event and thanked the event’s official supporter, Energy FM.
