Freedom of Information & Investigative Journalism

by isleofman.com 25th November 2011
Positive Action Group (PAG) continues its campaign for a Freedom of Information Act at the next public meeting on Monday 28th November 2011 Internationally renowned investigative journalist and author Heather Brooke is the guest speaker. Heather Brooke is a freelance journalist and Freedom of Information campaigner who is famous for uncovering the MPs' expenses scandal. She has worked for all the main national newspapers and as a consultant and presenter for Chanel 4's Dispatches. She is visiting professor at City University, London Department of Journalism and is regularly asked to speak at conferences all over the world. Her first book (2004), Your Right to Know: A Citizen's Guide to the Freedom of Information Act is an informative guide to help ordinary people to use the legislation to gain information from public bodies. It was written following her relentless 5 year campaign to get to reveal all about MPs' expenses, one of the defining political scandals in recent times. Her fight to uncover the truth was made into a BBC 4 drama On Expenses In 2010 she published The Silent State which exposes the lack of transparency at all levels of government in Britain. Recently The Revolution Will Be Digitised (2011) explored the world of computer hackers, internet whistle blowers and pro-democracy campaigners. Roger Tomlinson, Chair of PAG, stated: "Heather Brooke is currently one of the most influential journalists and authors around . We are delighted that she has agreed to break into her very busy schedule to come to the Isle of Man and help us with our own fight to have a Freedom of Information Act. The previous Brown government promised the legislation but failed to fully deliver. This government continues to prevaricate over it. We hope that Heather's visit will stimulate the public's interest in this very important topic and convince our politicians that it is essential that we have a fully functioning FOI Act without any more delay". As usual the public meeting is free and open to everyone, subject to the capacity of the venue. "Freedom of Information & Investigative Journalism" a presentation by Heather Brooke 7.30 p.m. Monday 28th November 2011 Manx Legion Club, Market Hill, Douglas Admission is free - All are welcome P A G website : www.positiveactiongroup.org ENDS
