There is still limited availability for “An Evening with Michael Portillo”, sponsored by Barclays Wealth. The controversial former MP for Kensington and Chelsea will take the Gaiety stage this evening for what promises to be an unmissable show!
Michael Portillo was born and brought up in North London before going to Cambridge to read history. Portillo first took a seat in parliament in 1984, and his memorable career in the House of Commons took in a leadership contest and a dramatic election defeat at Enfield Southgate in 1997, after holding the seat for 13 years.
Michael left the House of in 2005 and is now ready to share his experiences and his many incredible stories with the public. He remains in the public eye through his media work and enjoys presenting television programmes, radio broadcasting and writing. He has written about walking as a pilgrim on the Santiago Way and on working as a hospital porter. He has a weekly column in The Scotsman. He had a series for Channel 4 entitled Portillo's Progress and a highly-acclaimed programme in BBC2's Great Railway Journeys series, partly a biography of his father, Luis, who came to Britain as a refugee at the end of the Spanish Civil War. He has presented radio programmes on Wagner, the Spanish Civil War and also a programme on Elizabeth I, as part of the BBC’s very successful Great Britons series.
Portillo is an accomplished and powerful speaker, and will present for the first half of the show. After the interval, Michael will invite questions (not only on political matters where his humour and wit are appreciated), from the audience.
