An electric vehicle described as ‘the supercar, redefined’ recently took a ‘pit stop’ at Pulrose Power Station CCGT during a flying visit to the Isle of Man.
The iconic Tesla Roadster Sport is a low emissions vehicle capable of accelerating from 0 to 60mph in 3.7 seconds with a top speed of 125mph and an electric range of 245 miles when its Lithium-ion batteries are fully charged. Tesla only plans to produce a total of 2,500 cars of which over 2,000 have been sold around the world since production began in 2008.
The car was brought to the Island by Daniel Davey, Tesla EU Sales Advisor, where it was available for test driving. The Manx Electricity Authority’s Strategy and Business Development Manager, Richard Bujko, was lucky enough to go out in the car. He said: ‘We took the Roadster for a spin over the mountain and it handles superbly. Not only does the Tesla Roadster look good, but it’s incredible to think that the car produces low emissions and very little sound.’
The Isle of Man currently has three public electric car charging points around the Island – in Castletown, Ramsey and Douglas - which are being trialled by the Department of Infrastructure and the Manx Electricity Authority. Vehicle owners can apply for keys to access the electric charging points, which contain a 230V 16 Amp socket. Currently there are around ten Island residents with keys for these charge points but the numbers are expected to increase as the costs of running conventional cars become progressively more expensive.
MEA provides customers with cheap off-peak electricity between midnight and 07:00 and allows them to charge their vehicles at their own property using an MEA supplied EV charging point.
MEA Chief Executive Philip King said: ‘The performance of electric vehicles is improving all the time and it’s inevitable that more and more people will choose to drive either all electric or hybrid vehicles in the future as they increasingly become more practical and reliable forms of transport; offering a lower carbon solution to the transport sector’
