‘It’s up to me to know where to draw the line’
The Department of Health is spearheading a new campaign entitled ‘It’s up to me to know where to draw the line’ which has been developed with the help of the Island’s young people. The Department’s Public Health Directorate and partner agencies are supporting the campaign, which aims to raise awareness of alcohol misuse and risk-taking behaviour. In the midst of all the parties and fun of the Festive Season, it is important for everyone and young people in particular, to stay safe.
The campaign highlights the importance of individuals knowing their alcohol limit, as drinking too much can affect judgement and result in individuals making decisions that they normally wouldn’t make, which may have the potential to cause much greater consequences. Lowered inhibitions due to alcohol may mean young people say ‘yes’ when at other times you would say ‘no’. Evidence suggests that the incidence of reported Sexual Transmitted Infections (STI’s) and unexpected pregnancies are more common in the New Year period.
Minister for Health, David Anderson MHK, said: “I am delighted to see that young people have contributed to the development of this campaign. This will hopefully see the messages resonate with the target audience and draw attention to the issues associated with alcohol misuse, in order that the young and old can enjoy safer nights out during this Festive Season.”
Dr Kishore, Director of Public Health, said: “We understand that many people want to go out and enjoy the party season. We particularly encourage them to look after themselves and their friends. Planning ahead and taking the right precautions will help reduce the risk of a good night ending badly.
We want everyone, including young people, to have a good time and enjoy the festive atmosphere. We hope that through this campaign they will take some simple steps to ensure that they and their friends have safe celebrations.”
