Netball: League Week 9

by isleofman.com 14th December 2011
Magic Carpets 22 Team DQ Hurricanes 24 Team DQ Hurricanes resplendent in their new turquoise kit came out the victors in this very close fought match. Helen Doolan GD partnered Donna Long GK for Team DQ making a strong defensive unit and one which Sara Collister playing out of position as GA for Magic Carpets found hard to penetrate. Doolan and Long made many fine interceptions which were securely brought up the Court by Rebecca Harding C and Nikki Jarvis WA. Danni Kelly GS converted a lot of long shots and Jess Edmonds GA for Team DQ with her height and tenacity won the majority of rebounds which she then converted. Magic Carpets won the first quarter 5 goals to 3 and the third quarter 10 goals to 8 but this was not enough to win the match. Kerry Kelly C and Laura Crocker WA were successful in bringing the ball up court but with Nina Corrin, Magic Carpet’s usual shooter, absent Magic Carpets were always going to find it difficult to come out the winners. An enjoyable match only saddened by learning that it was the last match for Helen Pope who is moving to Monacco in the New Year. Helen will be missed not only by Team DQ Hurricanes who she has captained for several years but the whole netball fraternity. We wish you all the very best Helen. PoTM: Sarah Collister (Magic Carpets), Donna Long (Team DQ Hurricanes) The Annual Manx Netball Affiliation Christmas Tournament will take place on Sunday 18th December between 9.00-12 noon at the National Sports Centre. This mixed festive event promises to be an exciting, fast paced and action packed competition. Men will occupy three of the seven positions in each team and will compete head-to-head with competitors all vying for the number one spot. The men will play GS, GK and C against other men (for safety reasons!). Tournament organiser Kelly Lawson has confirmed the following teams will be included: Route 1 Crackers, Route 1 Stockings, SMP Ballasalla, Absolute Scaffolding, C&S Joinery (A, B, C & D), Moore Stephens Hurricanes, Fencibles A, Fencibles B. Although a few teams will tactically deploy the use of male basketballers, this really could be any teams' game. It's up to you boys! A great spectator sport, please feel free to come and support or watch the calamity from a safe distance. The perfect way to round up the first half of the season! Results: Sunday 11th December: Division 1: Magic Carpets 22, Team DQ Hurricanes 24; PokerStars 26, Fencibles A 28; Manx Glass Saints 45, C&S Joinery C 16. Division 2: Intersport 33, Missfits B 12.
