Don’t Suffer in Silence this Christmas

by isleofman.com 19th December 2011
The Isle of Man Police are encouraging the victims of domestic abuse to come forward and report incidents over the festive period and to encourage them to seek help and take steps to ensure they can enjoy a safe and happy Christmas. Domestic abuse is not just about violence it also encompasses financial, emotional, psychological and sexual abuse, or threats of it. There is more pressure on families and relationships around this time of year both emotionally and financially. This can escalated into domestic abuse. Police officers around the Island are aware that the rates of domestic abuse reported doubles over the Christmas and New Year period and are ready to offer advice and help when needed. Domestic abuse is largely under reported with only around 35 % of incidents disclosed to the police so officers hope to see a rise in the number of crimes reported to them over the festive season. Any rise in numbers has a positive side as it means that more victims have the courage and confidence to come forward. They also aim to reduce the level of seriousness of incidents and reduce the number of repeat incidents. Domestic abusers are cowards. They inflict pain and suffering on those closest to them who are least likely to report to the police. The message from the Isle of Man Police is clear, they will support victims to escape the violent and, or, abusive behaviour that they endure at the hands of their partner and hold the perpetrators responsible. Anyone who has been or who is the victim of domestic abuse or has any information regarding incidents are encourage to contact any Police Officer or Police Headquarters on 631212. Ends
