The award winning Manx Gilbert and Sullivan Society has been nominated for five National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA) Northwest region 2 awards for its 2010 production of the Pirates of Penzance. These nominations are for – • Best Chorus; • Best Staging of a Musical – Val Cowley; • Best Musical Director – Graham Kirkland; • Best Support (Male) – Karl Cubbon; and • Best Newcomer (Female) – Sarah Elder. The Society's chairman Karl Cubbon said: "These nominations recognise the hard work and outstanding performances given by the entire Society in our 2010 production of the Pirates of Penzance. There is strong competition for these nominations, from across the northwest and the Isle of Man, and to receive 5 is an outstanding achievement. In particular the nominations, for the best staging of musical for Val, and the best musical director for Graham, serve to recognise of the months of hard work they have put in behind the scenes in producing this show. Furthermore, the nomination for best chorus rewards the efforts the entire Society has made in to making this wonderful production. In addition to award winning productions such as these we also put on a number of concerts and small performances throughout the year. We have just started rehearsals for our Spring Concert to be held on Saturday 24th March at St Andrew’s Church Hall, Douglas. These rehearsals are held from 7.30pm each Friday in All Saints Church Hall (Alexander Drive, Douglas). I would encourage anyone over 13 to come along to have a good sing, make some new friends and enjoy some of Gilbert and Sullivan’s finest work. We would also like to invite new members, male and female, to join us for our production of the Mikado in October 2012. Rehearsals for this production will begin on Friday 13th April with everyone welcome – especially younger potential members.” ENDS
