Sound Cafe Car Park

by isleofman.com 8th February 2012

On 16th February work will commence to strip and replace the plastic cellular car park surface at the Sound. Since opening, the Sound Cafe has proven to be far busier than first predicted and one of Manx National Heritage’s most popular attractions, with over 80,000 visitors per year recorded in the past two years.

MNH monitors the vehicle numbers which drive through the car park, which averages 68,000 vehicle movements annually. This has resulted in much faster wear and deformation of the car park surface and in recent years it has increasingly become more difficult to walk over and maintain.

MNH received planning permission to replace the existing surface with harder wearing natural stone effect paving in February 2011. The work will be carried out by the Department of Infrastructure Operations Division in two phases commencing on 16th February and completing on 30th May with a two week suspension of works for the busy Easter fortnight from 1st April.

The works will require the closure of the lower and then the upper half of the car park in Phase 1 and Phase 2 respectively and therefore there will inevitably be some disruption for visitors.

Parking will still be available, and the Sound Cafe will continue to welcome visitors for the duration of the works.

MNH would like to apologise for any inconvenience while the works are in progress.
