Theft of Manx Electric Railway Overhead Cable

by isleofman.com 17th February 2012
Between the end of January 2012 and 14th February 2012, approximately 70 metres of copper cable has been cut down and stolen from the MER tramlines in the area of the Everlasting Bend / Bulgham, Lonan.  It is believed that a vehicle has been driven onto the tramlines and that the offender has then stood on the roof of the vehicle to access the overhead cables.  A cutting tool of sorts would then have been  used to cut the cables.  From evidence at the scene, it would appear that the culprits have remained in the area while cutting up the cable into manageable lengths.

Police enquiries have recovered the stolen property and have resulted in a number of arrests but at this time police would like to speak to anyone who may have seen a person or persons in the area of the tramlines during the relevant period.

Safety Warning – although it is out of season for the Electric Trams, there is no guarantee that the electricity to the cables has been always shut down as maintenance work does take place on the lines during the winter months requiring the cables to be live.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the officer in charge of the enquiry, Constable Tony Lawler at Onchan Police Station or any police officer.
