Fitness and Fundraising: Sport Relief Comes To Douglas

by isleofman.com 24th February 2012

The Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile is back – and it’s coming to Douglas. The town is to host its second Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile event on Sunday March 25.

Starting at the Bottleneck car park on Douglas Promenade at 12.30pm the Douglas Mile is set to be a memorable community event. Entrants don’t have to be sporty to take part, they need only choose to complete one, three or six miles, knowing the money raised will help change the lives of disadvantaged people around the world.

Douglas town centre manager Gill Anderson said: ‘The Douglas Sport Relief Mile is for all ages and all abilities. We’re aiming to make it a fun fitness-focused day out for all the family. We’ll be having a wellbeing area on Douglas promenade where there’ll be all kinds of fringe fitness-themed attractions to encourage healthier living…from sensible eating to sensible shoes - for walking, running or jogging!’

One of the businesses supporting the event is Up & Running of Bucks Road, Douglas. The store’s Chris Cale said: ‘The team at Up & Running will be on hand to offer advice as we all believe that in what’s going to be an amazing year for sport, Sport Relief is a great way to bring people together, promote fitness to all abilities and across all generations and, in the process, help change lives.’

Gill continued: ‘A good number of entrants have already signed up but we would welcome more and we’re also looking for volunteers to help on the day.

‘There’ll be Sport Relief Mile events taking place all over the UK on Sunday March 25 but only one in the Island, and that’s right here in Douglas so, with all the plans to regenerate Douglas, what better reason than Sport Relief Mile to regenerate your fitness levels and take part.’

The Sport Relief Weekend kicks off on Friday March 23 with Sport Relief on BBC One and more coverage on BBC radio, online and TV throughout the weekend.
