Onchan Scouts Rise To The Challenge

by isleofman.com 15th March 2012

The 2nd Onchan Moddey Dhoo Scout Troop put their fundraising skills to good use in a charity challenge for The Children’s Centre. The Scouts took part in the Think Big Challenge in which teams from a number of groups and businesses were given ?50 ‘seed money’ and then used their entrepreneurial skills to devise projects to raise more funds over a period of six weeks.

The Scouts used their seed money to organise a fun day at the 2nd Onchan Scout Hut in February which raised ?307. Attractions included a bouncy castle, coconut shy, ‘beat the goalkeeper’ and ‘wet sponge throwing’ competitions plus a cake sale and a variety of stalls. Scouts aiming to gain community badges also used their efforts in organising the fun day to take them a step closer to their goal. Joel Waterhouse, Assistant Scout Leader with 2nd Onchan Moddey Dhoo Scout Troop, said:

“It is fitting that by raising money for The Children Centre’s Think Big Challenge, Scouts aged 10 to 14 gained real experience of dealing with the community, helping children, and organising a large event. The Moddey Dhoo Scouts would like to thank everybody who came to the Scout Hut for the fun day, staff at Liftmann who stepped in to pay for the bouncy castle when the original plans fell through, and Onchan Commissioners for allowing use of the land. The Scouts are relishing the opportunity to come back bigger and better and take on the larger organisations in next year’s Think Big Challenge.”

Michelle O’Malley, Fundraising Manager for The Children’s Centre, said:
“The Scouts put in a lot of effort to raise funds and on behalf of The Children’s Centre I’d like to thank them for their generous donation. We rely on community support from all kinds of fundraising projects and this year’s Think Big Challenge has been a great success and raised a total of ?4,537. This will go towards funding our projects Out2Play, Mobex, Child Contact Centre, Philip Christian Centre, and Community Farm.”
A team from Capital International Group won the Challenge raising a total of ?1,431.80 which was then made up to ?3,000 by the company. Other teams taking part were from Isle of Man Ship Registry, Port St Mary Dental Practice and Onchan Rotary Club. Paragon Recruitment sponsored the event and provided the seed money for all the teams.
